Why Local Elections Matter — And Why Your Vote Counts More Than You Think

Today marks the start of early voting for Oak Ridge. And while national elections often dominate the headlines, it’s our local municipal elections that shape the everyday life of our town — from the rezoning approvals to the parks we enjoy, from how we grow to how we preserve what makes Oak Ridge special.

These decisions aren’t made in far-off capitals. They’re made right here, by neighbors you know. People who live here, raise families here, and care deeply about the future of our community.

As someone who’s spent decades working in budgeting, planning, and public service, I’ve seen firsthand how local leadership affects everything from fiscal responsibility to the quality of our amenities. When residents vote, they’re not just choosing candidates — they’re choosing priorities:

• Do we invest in parks and recreation that reflect our values?

• Do we plan for growth that protects our small-town character?

• Do we ensure transparency in how tax dollars are spent?

And here in Oak Ridge, there’s another layer to consider: our Town Council selects the mayor. That means when you vote for Town Council, you’re also voting for the individuals who will choose the person representing our town’s voice and leadership. It’s one more reason why every vote matters — and why informed, engaged participation is essential.

So today, I encourage every Oak Ridge resident to take part in shaping our future. Check your registration. Make a plan to vote. Talk to your neighbors. Ask questions. And most importantly, show up.
