Why I Spoke: A Candidate’s Perspective on Civic Engagement

🗣️ On Thursday night, I stood at the podium during public comments at the Oak Ridge Town Council meeting—not to campaign, but simply to introduce myself.

I’ve lived in Oak Ridge with my family for years now, and I’m running for Town Council this fall. But more than that, I’m a neighbor who cares deeply about the kind of community we’re building together. I didn’t come to make a speech filled with promises—I came to say hello, share a little about who I am, and invite conversation.

I chose Oak Ridge because of its values. I grew up in Guilford County, and when my wife and I were deciding where to raise our kids, this town stood out. It’s a place where tradition matters, where people know each other, and where public service still means something. I’ve tried to live that out—through Parks & Rec, volunteer work, and supporting our first responders.

That’s why I spoke. Because I believe in showing up. I believe in listening first. And I believe that even in a small town, the way we engage with each other—respectfully, openly, and with a shared sense of purpose—can shape the future.

Whether you agree with me or not, I’d love to hear from you. Because civic engagement isn’t just about elections—it’s about conversations. And I’m here for them.

Thanks for reading—and thank you to our Council for their continued service to Oak Ridge.
